Es va graduar (BSc + MSc) en ciències biològiques a la Universitat de Barcelona (UB). Posteriorment va cursar un programa de doctorat sobre el rècord sedimentari i l'evolució paleoambiental del Departament d'Estratigrafia i Paleontologia de la UB. A continuació, LI VAN concedir una beca predoctoral per investigar a l'Àrea de Prehistòria de la Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV). Va obtenir el títol de doctor de la URV amb una tesi sobre la morfologia dels eritròcits de mamífers en mostres de sang sobre matèries primeres lítiques d'interès per a la tecnologia prehistòrica.
El seu àmbit d'especialització és la microscòpia electrònica d'escaneig de les taques de sang (hemofonofoni).
A més de la seva activitat principal com a investigador, ha impartit cursos de postgrau de URV sobre paleoecologia humana, arqueologia molecular i epistemologia.
